Florence van de Ven
After retirement, Florence discovered a previously hidden artist’s talent. She says she was as shocked as Saul must have been on his way to Damascus. “This couldn’t be happening to me but it was happening to me!” Her first efforts were rather basic, but the seed had been planted. The autumn of her life has grown into the spring time of a new career. Florence paints with acrylics, a variety of animals and birds come to life with each painting becoming increasingly detailed. The fine lines bring texture, depth and realism to all her subjects. She has now expanded her subject matter to include her fond memories of early childhood on a farm. These memories are expressed in her detailed depiction of old barns and farm animals. Florence invites you to, “Come feel the country in the County.”
Melissa Cross
Melissa has been shooting photographs for more than 25 years. She studied photojournalism and creative photography at Loyalist College. However, while she was photographing a burning home, the angry homeowner threatened bodily harm. Melissa decided a “news” photo career was not what she wanted. “I wanted to shoot for me, not for someone else.” Melissa’s current career as a Project Coordinator took her to different places over the years, but never without a camera in her hand. This compilation of photos is a window into the world of nature with images composed of symmetrical forms and vivid colours found in everyday places. Unique camera angles explore forms of nature from the tiny to the majestic. “While I shoot with a digital camera, it is my opinion that it does not take expensive equipment to create compelling images. I sometimes use creative digital manipulation to place emphasis on a subject but not to obscure it.”
